What's it all about?

Turbocharge your career in the automotive industry by expanding your skillset and improving your knowledge of more complex maintenance and repair systems.

This course will perfectly build upon the knowledge, skills and behaviours acquired by studying the level 2 qualification and will see you undertaking more diagnostic work, getting to grips to vehicle electronics, and help you to become more confident with even the most intricate of engine repair work.

As part of this course, you will complete a research project covering operation and diagnosis of systems, which will allow you to improve your problem-solving skills, showing future employers your ability to work using your own initiative.

Course information

This course will look at some of the following areas:

  • advanced chassis systems
  • engine systems and electrics
  • fault diagnosis
  • engine diagnostics
  • ignition systems
  • petrol and diesel fuelling systems
  • advanced transmission systems
  • steering, braking and suspension
  • essential working practices and customer care.

You will also become confident using a variety of diagnostic equipment such as fault code readers/scanners, oscilloscopes, as well as general diagnostic equipment.

In order to be successful on this course, you will need to have:

  • GCSEs at grade 3 (D) in English and maths, and a level 2 diploma
  • relevant industry experience (to be discussed at interview). 

You will be assessed through a variety of practical tasks and assessments, and online and paper exams.

On successful completion you may progress to:

  • another level 3 engineering course at the College
  • an advanced Apprenticeship in light vehicle repair
  • employment in the industry as, for example, a trainee technician.

If you do go into employment you could complete the NVQ element of this diploma, adding value to your qualification.
