There’s no ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to our courses, as course duration can range from one day to several years. Whether it’s daytime or evening, online or in-person, we have a course for you. Course Fees and Funding

Don’t let the cost of studying put you off – most of our students study for FREE, and those who don’t qualify for funding are very often eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan.

Eligibility depends on both the course you have chosen to study and your individual circumstances.

What we Offer for Adult Learners

Professional and Technical Courses

Covering a broad range of learning areas such as health and beauty, hospitality, engineering and so much more, these are courses that focus on skills that you can use in the workplace, which can help to further your career.

City College Plymouth offers a range of higher education university-level courses in partnership with Plymouth Marjon University and the University of Plymouth.

Access courses are one year courses that bring you up to speed with the skills and qualifications necessary to enter a degree-level course either at the College or at a university.

GCSEs in English, maths and the sciences are often required as a starting point before you can study further. Gain these essential skills qualifications to unlock a brighter future with an access course or degree.

English is the foundation of all of our courses, so if it’s not your first language, an ESOL course will unlock a world of study opportunities for you!

Functional Skills Courses
Designed to build confidence and encourage resilience, our functional skills courses cover everything from digital literacy to basic professional skills to life skills, and will stand you in good stead for years to come.

Speak to us about your staff training needs, from management and professional skills to more technical industry-specific qualifications. Many of our courses can be offered free of charge, or with a small co-payment per employee.

Whether you’re changing careers or upskilling with your current employer, with over 1,500 apprentices currently learning while they work through City College, we’re sure to find the right fit for you.

These free short courses are designed to meet the needs of employers in the city, therefore guaranteeing an interview at the end of the course.

Adults living in the UK who don’t hold a maths and English GCSE are entitled to study these for free at the College.

Access to Employment Courses
Ideal if you need to build your skills and confidence so to access better work opportunities,. These courses offer a direct path from education to employment.

Multiply Maths

Multiply Maths is a new government-funded programme to help adults improve their numeracy skills.

Tony's Story: Access to Higher Education

Mature student Tony is not only learning about history, he’s creating it too!⁠

Tony, aged 71, has recently completed an Access to Higher Education course at City College Plymouth and is now set to become possibly the oldest ever history undergraduate at the University of Plymouth when he takes on a degree there.

With a remarkable story about positivity, loss and learning, Tony shows us it is never too late to learn!⁠
