What's it all about?

Would you love to be a hotel worker, kitchen assistant, or chef? Do you have ambitions of a hospitality career? At City College Plymouth, this City & Guilds Introduction to Hospitality and Catering can be studied at entry level, level 1 or level 2. This training programme will give you a basic introduction to the hospitality and catering industry. Through practical work in our training kitchens and retail food outlets you will learn, develop and practice basic catering and food and beverage service skills. You will find out about food hygiene and safety, customer service and the importance of teamwork, and apply this within our busy restaurant and cafe environments.

Course information

The main subjects taught include:

  • introduction to catering and hospitality industry
  • basic food production and cooking
  • serving food
  • food safety
  • preparing and serving dishes
  • introduction to healthy eating.

Your individualised study programme will be made up of the following four areas:

  • the qualification you are studying
  • English and maths
  • work experience
  • other activities to develop your personal skills e.g. preparing you for employment, training or higher/further education.

There are no specific entry requirements for this course.

You will be assessed on all practical skills in the teaching kitchens and restaurant and will receive the full support of our teaching team in compiling your portfolio of knowledge.

On successful completion you may progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Culinary SkillsLevel 2 Diploma in Food and Beverage Service or employment in the industry via an Apprenticeship.
